Penn State Credit Evaluation for AP German Language Exam
For a grade of three, credit is awarded for GER 1, 2, and 3 (12 credits).
For a grade of four, an additional 4 credits are awarded for German 201 (total of 16 credits).
For a grade of five, an additional 3 credits are awarded for German 302W,(total of 19 credits).
For a grade of three or above, the student is considered as having fulfilled the 12th credit-level foreign language requirement.
A Major in German requires 7 core courses (22 credits) after fulfilling the introductory language sequence (GER 1, 2, and 3):
- GER 201, GER 301, GER 302W, GER 310, GER 344, GER 401Y, and GER 431 or 432
- Depending on the degree path, the following additional courses are required:
Bachelor of Arts (B.A.):
12 additional credits:
- ONE general education course in German (GER 100, 127, 128N, 143, 166, 189N, or 200N)
- ONE additional 400-level literature and culture course (GER 440, 472, or 489)
- ONE 400-level linguistics course (GER 412 or 430)
- ONE additional 300- or 400-level courses taught in German of your choosing
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in German and Business:
9 additional credits in German:
- TWO German Business Communication courses (GER 308Y and 408)
- ONE additional 400-level course taught in German of your choosing
Plus 35 additional credits in Business and Business-related fields:
- These typically overlap with SMEAL requirements
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in German and Engineering:
12 additional credits in German:
- TWO German Business Communication courses (GER 308Y and 408)
- TWO courses in German taken abroad
Plus 21 additional credits chosen in consultation with your Engineering advisor.
Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Applied German:
12 additional credits in German:
- GER 200N (or a different general education course in German with approval of the German academic advisor)
- TWO courses in German taken abroad
- ONE additional 300 or 400-level course taught in German of your choosing
Plus 18 credits in supporting courses from your related field (e.g., Hotel, Restaurant, and Instititional Management; Linguistics; Applied Linguistics; Sociology; Economics; Science, Technology and Society; etc.)
A grade C or better is required for all courses in the major!
Honors in German Requirements:
- a minimum of a B+ average in courses offered for the major
- presentation of an outstanding honors thesis during the senior year
