German Online Initiative

Beginning in summer 2006, the German Online Initiative has introduced Penn State's first fully online language courses.  Since spring 2007, students have been able to take any of the courses in the basic language sequence (German 001, 002, and 003) in an online format. Online courses run in parallel to the on-campus program at University Park, allowing students to switch between on-campus and online courses at any point in the sequence. The online courses draw on findings from the fields of computer-mediated communication, cognitive neuroscience, psycholinguistics, and second language acquisition, such that each course integrates those technological applications most likely to foster language development at the respective levels of proficiency. A focus on the development of oral proficiency is supported by text and audio chat with other students and the course instructor as well as real time exchanges with intelligent conversational agents. Additional components include an interactive multimedia learning environment, weekly electronic message boards, and exchanges with German-speaking and German-learning e-pals.
